Tomato Soup & Grilled Cheese

This time of year, after the holidays, the weather can feel a little dreary- especially in South Dakota. With the coldest part of the season rolling around, many people like to try out new recipes, while others like to cook or eat trusted comfort foods. These recipes are great for the cold weather and the chilly days. Here are ten of the most loved, old and new! 


-Chicken/Beef Pot-Pie

This classic comfort food can be found in almost every grocery store, but it's highly recommended to make your own from scratch. Claimed and customized by many different cultures, this can be descended from both England and Ireland; but, following it further back, it is from ancient Greece and Rome. -Beef Burgundy/Bourguignon

This Recipe, although not so much of a classic, was first mentioned in a cookbook in 1903 by Chef Auguste Escoffier. However, it is suspected the original recipe can date back as far as the Middle Ages (400-1400 AD). This French stew is perfect for a cold winter night. Try this recipe!


-Lasagna

This simple but impressive family dinner is sure to make everybody happy! Loved by many, this easy-to-make dish will make you forget about the negative-twenty-degree weather. Guessed by historians to have been invented in ancient Greece, this meal truly found its footing sometime in the Middle Ages in Naples, Italy.  The name lasagna, or lasagne, came from the dish that it was cooked in! -Homemade Pizzas/Calzones

A famous and classic dish, these are widely loved. It's recommended to make your own, whether you plan on making pizza or calzones. Calzones originated in Naples in the early 1700s, whereas pizza is likely to have originated in Rome as a flatbread with tomatoes. For a customizable favorite, try this recipe!


-Chicken Noodle Soup

Famous for being a winter staple, soups have diversified and grown, but one tried-and-true recipe remains. Chicken noodle soup began as two separate dishes. Both chicken soup (which originated in ancient Greece) and noodle soup (which began somewhere around 1200 AC in Asia) have existed for centuries, but the famous Campbell’s soup was the one to bring them together in the year 1934. -Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup

A complete classic, this pairing has been popular since day one. Tomato soup is credited to have been created in America several years before the civil war by Eliza Leslie. Grilled cheese, descended from croque monsieurs, really developed in the early nineteen-hundreds when pasteurized cheese and sliced bread became the rage. They were cooked for thousands of members of the Navy, mostly as open-faced sandwiches with shredded cheese. Try this recipe for the soup, and this one for the grilled cheese! 


-Mississippi Potroast

Any and all pot roasts are great choices for the freezing days ahead. A warm and delicious meal, this particular kind of pot roast began as a way to modify an existing recipe that was deemed too spicy in the 1990s in Ripley, Mississippi. A great recipe can be found here!


-Fried Ravioli

Although not typically associated with the Winter season, toasted ravioli swept the nation, and is highly suggested for any winter recipes as an appetizer or side! Two restaurants in St. Louis claim to have invented this dish in the 1940s. It was named “toasted” ravioli, so as to not give the impression that it was greasy or fatty. -Potato Soup

Soups have been long recognized as perhaps the food of winter! One favorite is a potato soup, likely to have been invented by either King Louis XV or, more widely believed, Chef Louis Diat in the New York Ritz Carleton as a descendent of potato and leek soup. Try this great recipe!


-Chicken Paprikash

This spicy and delicious meal is perfect for cold and grey winters. Chicken Paprikash was adopted as a Sabbath dish by the Jews of Hungary and Czechoslovakia. From there, it was brought all over the world, and loved by many! One amazing recipe here.
