Burger Chef is a chain restaurant that was prominent across the US in the 70’s. The fall of the chain began with a mysterious kidnapping and murder of 4 young employees in Speedway, Indiana. To them, the night of November 17 seemed like any other, but they had no idea of the horrific crimes to come. When the Saturday morning employees began their shift and found a suspicious scene at their Burger Chef, they assumed the four closers from the night before Davis, Jayne Friedt, Mark Flemmonds, and Ruth Ellen Shelton, had run off with cash from the register.
This theory seemed to be the most viable as money and Jayne’s car were missing. A key aspect of this theory left out by investigators is that Ruth Ellen and Jayne’s coats were left behind. Because of their sneaking suspicion of teenage mischief, investigators allowed the employees to continue work as usual and clean up the fresh crime scene. The deceased bodies of Ruth Ellen Shelton, Daniel Davis, Jayne Friedt, and Mark Flemmonds were found two days later on Sunday, November 19, 1978, in a wooded area of Johnson County, Indiana. Ruth and David had been shot numerous times, Jayne suffered from multiple stab wounds, and Mark was found 50 yards away with bruises similar to those from severe beating. It was later concluded that Mark had passed away due to suffocating in his own blood.
The four gruesome murders that occurred that night have never been solved and remain Speedway, Indiana’s biggest mystery.
