“Long Legs” was released July 12th, 2024, directed by Osgood Perkins and starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage, and is now receiving mixed feelings from viewers. The press following the release date was considered phenomenal by many horror fans, as it created ominous and horror-filled expectations. But unfortunately, the movie did not live up to them. Long Legs depicts an FBI agent uncovering a series of satanic serial murders, and is meant to be an extremely terrifying and dramatic film. The movie maintains this narrative through the first half, but loses it in the second half. Long Legs begins slowly building tension with beautiful cinematography, and a well written plot, but the climax is then revealed word for word in the second half. This was considered a let down and a “party foul” by many in the horror community. Contributing to this disappointment, the ending was also quite abrupt, and many viewers have claimed that the plot of this film is confusing rather than scary. On the other hand, this film’s cinematography is considered to be done quite well. The color scheme of the lighting and characters is very melancholy and eery, and the wide camera angle shots featured in contrast with the old film camera style shots create a very visually engaging film. Overall, Long Legs was a decent horror film, but not “the movie of the year” it was made out to be.
