“Who’s a good dead doggie?” - Frankenweenie
Originally a short film from the 80s, the 3D stop-motion movie Frankenweenie brings about plenty of classic horror movie themes including, but not limited to, championing society’s outsiders, elements of the supernatural, fascination with the macabre, and the bemusement of an artificial suburban family. Formally produced in 2012, Frankenweenie was known for its ominous tone and mockery of the 1931 film Frankenstein.
Sparky is the beloved “dead doggie” of the main character, Victor Frankenstein, and is among the cute, but decidedly uncanny-looking characters displayed throughout the film. Without recognizing the vast consequences that may follow, Victor resurrected his deceased dog, Sparky, with his school science experiment in the most Frankenstein-style. This event helped us recognize Tim Burton’s playful gothic and dark style. Which eventually became his trademark over the years.
Many movie-goers concur that Frankenweenie is among the best works of the Tim Burton classics. Including Corpse Bride, Coraline, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. One thing these movies have in common, is their excellent stop-motion picture, along with the black and white works that add to the gothic theme. Some parts may provide a sensation of distaste, but others will create smiles and laughter. Nonetheless, this movie is an entrancing movie and a Halloween marathon classic perfect for families of all ages.
