Driving on “High Land”
Preston James Hyland was born in the Sioux Falls hospital on May 23, 2006. Preston has one older sister, Mandee, and a dog named Rosie. He has lived in the same house in Madison, South Dakota, his whole life but would enjoy living in Montana because of the beautiful landscapes and the few people. Preston likes to spend most of his free time playing video games or learning about something new. When he isn’t doing one of his favorite hobbies, he’s working at Hyland Machining, where he says the most rewarding part is “having a lot of free time.” Preston likens himself to a golden retriever because he loves being active, taking naps, and getting attention. He lives by one motto: “Tomorrow isn’t promised, live every day like it is your last.”
Some things Preston enjoys include the color blue, all different genres of music, eating chicken alfredo, and watching Ironman or Brooklyn Nine-Nine. His favorite car is a Camaro because they have a cool design and great power. He enjoys the older and newer models, but he isn’t a big fan of the late 90s or early 2000s models. Preston typically finds engaging with technology to be something that comes easy for him. His favorite subject is science because it is fun to learn about how things work and why they are the way that they are. Preston would love to have the superpower of flight because he thinks it would be cool to see things from a different view. One thing he is scared of is heights, but he doesn’t let that stop him from doing anything.
After high school Preston wants to attend a tech school for machining and take over his dad's business when he’s ready. In ten years, Preston sees himself with a house and a large open yard to enjoy spending time with his future family consisting of a wife and kids. If he had to teach any subject he would teach either agriculture or technology. On Preston's bucket list, he wants to visit a couple of different countries and observe the different cultures. Preston advises underclassmen to “do something - don’t do nothing.” He also recommends joining extra activities in high school to add more fun instead of only showing up to classes and going home. The most memorable moments Preston had throughout high school were football games and each year's homecoming week.
