Senior Spotlight: Johanna Coffey

When asked if you had 5 million dollars to spend in 5 days, but couldn’t spend any of it on yourself, what would you do with it? 18-year-old senior at Madison High School Johanna Coffey said she would spend it on research. More specifically research to help her mom. Her mother, Darla Coffey, had surgery on her neck with a problem with the bones in her neck, and they haven't found a way to help her yet, so she would like to pay for the research to help her. But, she would save some of it and get her parents out of debt if they were in any.

When living in Madison there is not much to do, so she spends her free time either watching her favorite television show The 100, or her favorite movie, Mars. Johanna also goes on the occasional moped scooter ride around Lake Herman; she couldn’t live without her scooter. It's her source of freedom, she can leave when she wants and can go anywhere. Johanna loves adventure. Her favorite family memory was when she and her family went to New Orleans on a cruise. Johanna loved this trip for the adventure and experience it gave her, also had gotten to see the Gulf of Mexico and thought it was amazing, which is ironic because she has a fear of the ocean.

Even though Johanna is scared of the ocean, the creatures that reside in it make her curious about certain aspects of the ocean. For example, if she were to further research one animal in the world to fully understand it would be a shark. In addition, Johanna wants to answer questions that other scientists haven’t fully covered, such as “How much calcium does it actually take for a shark to grow 100 teeth?.” Biology is Johanna’s favorite subject because this senior likes to look into creatures and find out new information that nobody knows about or fully researched.

In addition to the subject of sharks, if one food item could describe the last year of her life it would be a well-aged shark from Iceland. Her last year was the most “disgusting year of her life” because she had to go through the toughest year of high school, junior year. It was very stressful and it didn’t help the Covid-19 had cut it short. But even though the well-aged shark is from Iceland, Johanna would still love to live there for a year. Johanna’s family originated from there, and she would like to experience the adventures and learn about the differences from back then to now.

Although Johanna would love to visit Iceland she needs to go to college to make the money to afford it. After this senior graduate from Madison High School, she would like to attend an online college and get a criminal law degree. Johanna doesn’t want to sit in a stuffy office all day every day; she wants to be out in the world. In ten years she sees herself living in California. She chose CA since it is so large, and when there are more people there tends to be more crime, which means more money for her. But her intention isn’t just for the money, she wants to help people and protect them.

While Jo living in California, she would like to meet the sister that she never knew she had. Johanna has recently found out that she lives in California. They plan to meet up and become friends one day.

Although Johanna already knows what she wants to do with the rest of her life, she also knows what adventures she wants to take before starting her career. Before Johanna goes to college she wants to go on a senior trip. This senior wants to save money to go to Canada and go to their aquariums. She finds it fascinating. Other than that, her wishes are to travel and enjoy the experience.

If Johanna were to leave one piece of advice behind for the incoming freshman she would recommend using all available resources like a Quizlet to help get you through school.
