Senior Spotlight: Emily VanLiere

If you’re ever looking for Emily, you can often find her on the tennis courts or hear her cheering for the Bulldogs on the sidelines as a cheerleader. Emily Anna Van Liere is a 17-year-old senior attending Madison High School. She is really active around the school and would probably compare herself to the movie character Elle Woods, from Legally Blonde. Emily said, “...because I’m smart in school but not so much out of it.” Emily, daughter of Bridget and Doug Van Liere, sees her future with a job that she genuinely enjoys, a husband, and perhaps a child or two. When not on the tennis court or sidelines, Emily nannies for a summer job as well as in her church nursery at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Emily lives with both her parents and her brother Gerrit, who is an eighth-grader at Madison Middle School. Emily wants a dog, but her mom won’t allow one in the house. Outside of her school activities, Emily enjoys spending time with her friends and watching shows and movies such as Grease, Friends, Dance Moms, and The Office. Oftentimes she finds herself watching her favorite shows and movies with her friends. Emily’s favorite color is pink because there are endless shades and they’re all pretty. She also spends her weekends watching her dad drive race cars. Another thing Emily likes is math class. Many people dislike it, but what calls Emily to math is that there is one straightforward answer with no grey area. She also mentioned she enjoys history.

As stated before, Emily keeps herself quite busy. Emily has been dancing since she was just four years old. Today, she is a huge asset to two cheerleading teams, her dance team, the tennis team, and the track team as a high jumper. School has always been important to Emily and although it’s not completely decided yet, Emily is thinking about attending SDSU next fall for elementary education or counseling.

As Emily goes about her senior year, she continues to remain busy. Emily had a successful tennis season and looks forward to cheering the boys and girls on in basketball this winter as well as a track season.
