If you have been on the internet lately, there is a good chance you have heard of Wordle. Wordle is a daily word game hosted by the New York Times that gives players six attempts to guess a random five-letter word. Each guess will turn a letter green if it is in the correct place, yellow if it is in the word but not in the right place, or gray if the letter simply isn’t in the word. Using these clues, players can discern what the winning word is. The ultimate goal of Wordle is to discover the final word in the least amount of guesses possible, which lends itself to some competition amongst its users.
Very quickly, this simple game has amassed a huge fan base of dedicated players. It has gotten so popular that when you look up “Wordle” on Google, their logo is animated like a Wordle game! Wordle comfortably settled into a part of people’s daily routines. In November 2021 Wordle had around 90 daily players, which grew to a massive 300,000 by January 2022. Needless to say, the game blew up. This can partly be attributed to the fact that everyone, across the board, gets the same daily word, making it exciting to talk to others about their process.
Similar to popular TV shows, Wordle has developed many spin-off games. Some of which include Quordle (my personal favorite), Nerdle (for math lovers), Heardle (for music lovers), Worldle (for those geography folks), and even Taylordle (for my Swifties out there). Whatever your interest is, I’m positive you could find a whole website dedicated to daily Worldle-esque puzzles about it, so go ahead and try it out!
